There is relatively a lot of information known about amulets and talismans in European regions, but, honestly speaking, there are very few truly authentic and reliable sources. To fill this gap, it is necessary to examine, step by step, the basic principles of Arabic talismanic magic. We will begin with names and celestial spheres.
NOTHING WITHOUT A NAME
When extracting the numerical values of the name of a woman or a man, the name is taken together with the mother’s name, regardless of whether it is written in a certain procedure (amal) or not. The mother’s name serves for precise identification (distinction). Some people add the father’s name, but this is not correct. Using the father’s name may introduce uncertainty and leave room for doubt as to whether the father is truly the biological father, and that is something only Divine power truly knows. However, the fact that someone’s mother is their real mother is considered certain. Therefore, on the Day of Judgment, the Almighty God will call people by the names of their mothers.
For example, there may be many people named Muhammed Hasan, but when the mother’s name is added, for example Muhammed Husejn, son of Ummat-ul-Hafiz, that name will not belong to any other person. Therefore, precise identification is extremely necessary for talismans or spiritual procedures (amal).
Usually, the name given at birth is used. In many cases, there is doubt about what the real birth name is, because some people change their names several times. Sometimes one name is given by one person, while another name is used in everyday communication and remains in use for years.
Therefore, remember that the name which will be used is the one that remained permanent after birth, or the one that was changed but remained permanently in use, and which is recorded in documents, school certificates, and similar records — this will be considered the real name.
Some people shorten their names and conduct business activities under that shortened name, and often other people call them by that name. However, in talismans such shortened names are not accepted, because they are substitute names and not real names.
For some women, the name changes after marriage. In that case, the name given at birth is used. However, if the name was changed at the time of marriage and recorded in the marriage certificate, and later became the permanent name, then this new name will also be considered valid.
For officials (functionaries) whose mother’s name is not known, their commonly used full name together with their title or function should be used in order to achieve precise identification.
Between the name and the father’s name, the words “bin” (son of) or “bint” (daughter of) are not used. If the name is written inside the amulet (naqsh), it is written together with the mother’s name, but without the words “bin” or “bint”. However, in additional text written below the talisman, “bin” or “bint” may be written between the names.
Words that indicate origin, nickname, title, or spiritual status, such as: Sayyid, Sheikh, Aga, Mirza, Mulla (Mawlavi), Pir, and similar, are not considered part of the name. These words are connected with origin, caste, or family, and therefore should not be included in the name.
However, if it concerns an official person whose mother’s name is not known, then for the purpose of precise identification, the full name and known designation or title may be used, so that at least partial distinction can be achieved.
THE SEVEN HEAVENS OR SPHERES
The name of the first heaven is Barfiyala. Within it there is one constellation (zodiac sign) called Cancer (Saratan), which is the abode of the planet the Moon (Qamar). The Moon passes through each sign in 2¼ days, and within one month completes its circuit of the entire celestial sphere. The Moon reaches its exaltation (elevation, sharaf) in the sign of Taurus (Sevr) at a specific degree.
The name of the second heaven is Parqīdvar. Within it there are two constellations, namely Gemini (Jawza), which is the abode of the planet Mercury (Utarid). Mercury passes through each sign in 8 days, and in 138 days completes its circuit of the entire heaven. Mercury reaches its exaltation in the sign of Virgo (Sunbula) at the 15th degree.
The name of the third heaven is Maʿūn. Within it are constellations, among them Libra (Mīzān), which is the abode of the planet Venus (Zuhra). Venus passes through each sign in 25 days, and in 225 days completes its circuit of the entire celestial sphere. Venus reaches its exaltation in the sign of Pisces (Hūt) at the 27th degree.
The name of the fourth heaven is Al-Kawn. Within it there is one constellation called Leo (Asad), which is the abode of the planet the Sun (Shams). The Sun passes through each sign in 30 days, and in 365 days completes its circuit of the entire heaven. The Sun reaches its exaltation in the sign of Aries (Hamal) at the 19th degree.
The name of the fifth heaven is Atnā. Within it are constellations, among them Aries and Scorpio, which are the abode of the planet Mars (Mirīkh). Mars passes through each sign in 30 days, and in 630 days completes its circuit of the entire celestial sphere. Mars reaches its exaltation in the sign of Capricorn (Jadī) at the 28th degree.
The name of the sixth heaven is Bardiyā. Within it are constellations, among them Sagittarius (Qaws), which is the abode of the planet Jupiter (Mushtarī). Jupiter passes through each sign in one year, and in 12 years completes its circuit of the entire heaven. Jupiter reaches its exaltation in the sign of Cancer (Saratan) at the 15th degree.
The name of the seventh heaven is Tajū or Atkal. Within it are constellations, among them Aquarius and Capricorn, which are the abode of the planet Saturn (Zuhal).
