Evil power of the sun

Spells are supernatural and mysterious phenomena which attacks all living and dead things. It is claimed among the folk that people, animals, plants, items and even some celestial bodies such as the moon can fall under the influence of the evil eye. Old Bosnian women have a custom of saying, when they first see the new moon: “Mašanla, look at the new moon!” because of the comparison of the new moon, just “born”, to a small child, innocent and helpless, especially when faced with something as powerful and destructive as a spell. In opposition to the gentle and unprotected new moon is the sun, which although known as a classic symbol of light and life, in Bosnian tradition it was always considered evil “until the winter passes”.

Namely, according to folk (agrarian) calendar in BiH, the year was once divided in only two parts, summer and winter, each lasting 6 months, which is residue of druidic beliefs since the time when Celts mixed with the Illyrians in the Balkans. Old Bosnian women used to hide fresh milk from the sun, covering the vessel with a cloth or lid “since if the sun sees it, it will no longer be!”.

In the north-western part of BiH, from which I draw most of my beliefs about fear and spells, in the past it was said about cows “that it feeds half of the home”, from there stems the folk name for cattle – treasure, therefore there was a great fear that an evil neighbour might hurt the treasure in the stall with black magic and spells. For defence and protection various prophylactic rituals for preservation of cattle were performed by farmers. Most endangered were milk cows with big udders, also cows after giving birth, they would have a red cloth tied to their tail, in order to neutralise any attempt of evil eye. In certain places a wooden spoon was placed around the cows neck or her horn was spun around and a small amulet with a piece of yew tree was placed around it.

Besides cattle spells can affect wild animals. Among the Arabs it is believed that a wolf, tiger and lion can be stopped in the middle of an attack on a human if the human possess evil eye. Allegedly, only donkeys are immune to evil eye as well as a peacock whose tail with its unique mark served the Turks to come up with their nations most famous amulet nazar boncuk or as it is called in Bosnia – blue eye.

Axe on the roof of a house

Traditional fear from spells gave birth to a nice custom of magical ornamentation i.e. decorating doors of farmsteads such as barn, stables, kruzane (houses for storage of corn), corral for sheep and houses. Namely, with a short text in Arabic, holly letter of the Qur’an, people etched tested prophylactic terms such as “Mašallah” or one of Allah’s names.

“On the front side of one, bigger, older house in Sarajevo it is written “Ya Hafiz” (God protector), for protection. This sentence can be found in numerous homes among Bosniaks, especially in beautifully decorated rooms (šikli odaja) of rich people with golden letters on a black basis (background), written and framed.”

Our forefathers the Bogomils placed a wooden axe on the roof of a house for prophylactic reasons, it served as a weapon whose blade will cut all evil which threatens the home.

However, an even more interesting segment of this belief hides in it the fact that the Illyrian Bosnian people dedicated the axe to the Grand Mother, the one which creates life and protects it, whose shape of a half moon or pregnant woman’s stomach perfectly matches the profile of the ancient goddess (1). That’s why it was said until the middle of the twentieth century that one should bring an axe with him wherever he goes, “since you can defend yourself with it but also cut fire wood, cut what you need, etc.” (2)

Another Illyrian belief, the one about stars, has a direct correlation with the evil eye. It is known, namely that the Illyrians believed fatalistically that every human has his own star in the sky which is the symbol of his life. The moment the star “falls” the life of its owner “shuts down”. This is why the Illyrians avoided looking at the starry sky out of fear of seeing their own star, or worse, to cast a spell on it with their gaze and so summon doom in their life.

Note

(1) The position of the axe itself on the roof alludes to its celestial connection to the lunar cycle.

(2) Motif of an axe as the symbol the Grand Mother can be identified in the following legend, whose origin dates from the time of matriarchy in our region. In Velika Kladuša, there is a legend that during the night of Uštap (Full Moon) on the moon’s surface one can see a gigantic figure of a man with a raised axe. As the legend further reveals that man is a son of one mother which he out of anger tried to kill by raising an axe on her, for punishment God killed him and teleported him on the surface of the moon as a warning to all that one should not raise their hand against their mothers.

Jinn cause fear and blockades

Utilization of amulets and talismans in curing traumatic conditions is perhaps one of the most fascinating segments in folk medicine in BiH. Since the old days, the amulets were brought to the level of almost universal panacea in curing all forms of mental but also certain physical ailments. Beneficial power of one or more prayers mixed into the content of the amulet or talisman, which replaced pagan bajalice (spell) and oaths, is based on the same principle of directing wishes or pleas for freeing the body from the negative influence of some entity, which found a home in the host due to a transgression of a certain taboo.

Namely, according to Islamic mythology when Allah created Adam and Eve, he had to place an invisible curtain between them and the Jinn (demons), so that the monstrous appearance of the Jinn wouldn’t frighten them and awaken shudders every day. Similarly, he made it so that people will be more or less protected from evil spirits, and he ordained them to sleep and rest during the night, so that the Jinn may have the freedom to move. That myth created a lot of taboo with which literally all contact with Jinn was avoided, because of their detrimental influence on the human body and psyche.

From the most familiar taboos among the Bosnian folk the ones tied to sunset are mentioned, when demons exit from their hideouts and gain power, which will last until sunrise i.e. dawn. That’s why people avoided to go outside in the evening, to pass by walnut trees, places where wood is being chopped, where dirty water is being thrown, etc.

If it happens that an individual accidentally or on purpose disregards some of the numerous taboos, he can become a target of the demons and risk possession i.e. entrance of the Jinn in the human body. The most obvious symptom of presence of an evil spirit inside a man is the appearance of inexplicable fear. Namely, suddenly the person starts feeling a more intensive restlessness and fright from night, closed space, certain animals, food, etc.

Talisman’s used against fear

With the development and spread of writing, the cognition that vows and curses, if written down on paper, take on their material form and exist longer, and with that last longer as well, unlike uttered formulas whose effect is immediate but disperses quickly. Although it has been recorded that our Bogomil forefathers used certain holly texts when creating amulets used for curing and protection, only with the beginning of the Ottoman occupation and advent of Islam did this practice see an expansion in BiH.

As far as we can comprehend from pretty modest literature and data, the Ottomans were under direct influence of Persian-Arabic magical beliefs, combined with certain Islamic teachings. But, what is especially interesting is that the Ottomans are as a Mongolian people known for shamanistic practices and retention of numerous animalistic beliefs. This is why Turkish magic abounds in various syncretic elements and this peculiarity is especially visible in the form of the talismans. While Arabic-Persian talismans follow a standard form of construction, according to which the amulet possesses a holly text and magical square (vefk), with Turkish talismans the form is based on what I would call “shamanistic diagrams” i.e. they abound with graphical representations of spiritual beings through one or more lines.

According to magical principles the Jinn, main culprits of all mental diseases, can succumb to the will of an individual with the help of ancient seals and invocations. Controlling those negative spiritual strengths the wizard can consciously inflict great evil on an individual or even a group of people. When he wants to block a person i.e. make him unsuccessful in certain or all segments of life, the magi ritually directs one or more Jinn towards him, they will possess him and with their destructive influence they will awaken inside of him various phobias from which he will be completely blocked: unsure of himself, scared, prone to jitters, lack confidence and hysterical.

Allegedly, with very decisive magical gestures fear can be “awoken” in any human. Individual Bosnian stravarke, such as deceased Fatima Dizdarević, explain how one can cause phobia from graves and the dead, namely, it is enough to discretely throw some dirt from a grave onto someone, without them noticing it. But, similarly if someone is scared of the above mentioned then it is recommended for them to look at their own reflection in the water which was used to bathe the deceased person.

All spiritual authorities in BiH are of the opinion that fear can be placed on someone with the help of various forms of divinations, among which the most famous techniques are those of directing an evil spirit through spells. Specifically, we’re talking about numerous phobias and the most frequent of all is the sudden fear of the dark – achluophobia – and this issue is usually solved by writing the following talisman (1) which the diseased carries with him at all times, until the uneasy feeling subsides.

With the help of magical rituals one can, allegedly, influence a person in such a way that he/she will start to feel an inexplicable fear towards a certain individual or it can happen that a man is scared of a woman or vice versa – sexophobia. In that case a Bosnian Imam creates the following talisman, which the diseased will, like in the first example, carry with him at all times.

It is evident that the craze for amulets from Imam’s did not stop in the 21st century and every so often we can read in the printed media or internet portals that some famous persons, especially from the show business, visited one of numerous Imam’s, seeking help for their issues. Besides the mentioned famous persons, regular people also visit these spiritual healers, trying to get a positive resolution to an unpleasant situation in which they find themselves in. When we’re talking about curing fear then the inscriptions for passing exams are most sought after, when one wants to neutralise jitters and blockages.

Love dolls

When we speak of magical dolls and their usage in spells, the first thing which will associate us with this topic are the planetary popular voodoo dolls which owe their fame to Hollywood. However, such form of occult influence does not have its origins from the voodoo religion, but has its roots in pre-history. The first traces are found in Spain, in the caves of Altamira where one can see paintings of cave men which drew pictures of spiked animals wanting to weaken their strength and speed and also make themselves more capable hunters. The idea to influence something magically over drawings and later dolls is very old and is present in numerous world magical teachings.

It is an open secret that with the help of dolls one can perform rituals of dark and white magic and that with the help of plain plastic dolls one can directly influence spiritual beings such as the Jinn. Namely, individual Bosnian exorcists in extremely dramatic moments of their work apply the method of burning Jinn attackers, if there is no other way to chase him away from the body of the person which it occupied. On that occasion the exorcist takes a plain plastic doll and equates it to the Jinn aggressor, loudly uttering that he is burning the Jinn and not the doll. But, these are extreme moments which are avoided by both the exorcist and the Jinn themselves.

The practice of using dolls for magical purpose is not unknown among the Bosnian witches. It is practiced in those situations when an effect of a spell is absent therefore we can conclude that it is used in desperate circumstances. Magical doll contains a part of the victim i.e. the person the spell is targeted at and in it a part of the victim must be inside, such as hair, nails, pieces of clothing or some dirt that the person stepped on. The doll represents a miniature version of the person on which one wants to influence. The principle is simple; everything has an astral body, fluid energy which doubles the substance with mater and ensures the integrity of the later.

Humans like animals and plants radiate energy and all our steps are unique energy footprints. Through that energy accumulated on individual things such as the clothes we wear or shoes we can be directly influenced. This is a well known fact by individual nations among which photography is unwanted because of the belief that it can trap a part of the human soul.

In folk songs we come across signs of such spells in various verses where the woman tells to her beloved how she took dirt from the place he stepped and buried it under the flower of marigold or under thorn apple in order for him to be sad and to be hysteric when he is not around her.
Today, because of the asphalt and concrete it is hard to get someone's footprint and this type of love spell loses its intensity. However, if you are lucky to get a footprint during a walk through the park or in nature you should use it to make a love doll.

It is even better if you can come across more props such as hair, nails, pubic hair and a piece of clothing of your partner because then besides dirt you will have more props to construct a more original doll.
If you want a doll which will emotionally and sexually bring you and your partner closer together and inhale new passion in the relationship then you should do the following: from a part of your partner's shirt you should stitch a doll, diameter of ten centimetres whose insides you will fill with the dirt taken from the footprint. Using a marker draw a face, eyes, ears, nose and mouth using those colours which correspond to your partner. If he has blue eyes and dark hair then make sure you are using a blue and black marker.

In a similar manner make a doll which will represent you. Since you have done all of the above you are only left with the ritual of connecting the dolls. You will perform it in the following manner. You will squeeze the dolls together, face to face, imitating a couple making love or kissing, then tie the dolls together using a red thread from head to toe effectively creating two dolls in one.
While wrapping the dolls you should utter the following formula:

N.(name of lover) me elif, you elif,
you were muti
whatever I'm doing you are doing
look with my eyes (blowing in dolls three times)
hear with my ears (blowing in dolls three times)
speak with my mouth (blowing in dolls three times)
operate with my hands (blowing in dolls three times)
walk with my feet (blowing in dolls three times)
veledalin amin from God amin.

Those wrapped dolls you will wrap additionally with a piece of cloth from which you collected your partners sperm after intercourse and which you have used to wipe your vagina and you will put the dolls underneath your marital bed, in the middle. From that moment on the dolls will, while you are sleeping, affect your astral bodies with their energy which will reflect in the material creating a larger physical attraction between the two of you. The ritual of doll construction should be done in the night of the full moon.

In individual spells a doll doesn't have that classic human form, instead it is formed in a specific body part which one wants to influence such as the penis, when the witch wants to control sexual power of a male. If the woman is certain that her husband is cheating on her, in an attempt to stop him from doing it, she will bring his underpants to the witch. The witch shapes the underpants in the form of the penis and wraps it with a thread in order to accurately portray the shape but also to fixate it. A doll created in such a manner is a guarantee that the husband will lose potency with other women and will be forced to be an obedient husband due to such a predicament.

Secrets of a hollow amulet

In practice of Bosnian and Albanian Imam’s and sheik’s there is an extremely interesting segment of spiritual medicine which is based on the healing of people from supernatural elements (black magic, spells, possession) by passing through a so called hollow amulet. Namely, only these three European countries i.e. Bosnia, Kosovo and Albania, where Muslims are a majority, the practice of writing long amulet texts was recorded which were a mixture of magical squares, God’s names, duas and prayers from the Qur’an. Paper on which the amulet was written was usually two meters long and its width is ten centimetres. Amulet text is written on both sides of the paper and its ends are connected using duct tape, in order to form a circle. That’s why among the folk it is called a hollow amulet.

Because of the pretty demanding content the text is written for one month or even more, in order to align the writing with the lunar phase. During the entire process, before and after writing, the Imam is praying to God and lighting pleasant fragrances, and he even fasts when processing more demanding parts of the amulet.

Its primary purpose is intended for annulling of negative energy through a ritual of passing the diseased through it i.e. the amulet is passed from the head down the body to the legs, usually three times. Another specificity of this amulet is that she is, unlike the rest, it is not carried wit oneself and after use its owner, usually Imam-exorcist, places it in a clean and neat place, until the next time it needs to be used. Of course, as a measure of precaution, and in order to protect it from dampness and impurities, the amulet is wrapped in a see through duct tape.

In the tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina a status symbol was that one could order and pay for such an amulet, since the price was pretty steep. It was carefully guarded and transferred through generations as a valuable family heirloom. Also, a special wooden box was created for the amulet, richly ornamented and was inherited through male successors and in absence of males a daughter could also receive it. In the name of the amulet one would mandatorily give alms to the poor and one could not refuse to help someone with it if a person sought such help. Such help could not be reimbursed.

Among the Arabs and Persians such a way of construction and usage of the amulet doesn’t exist, while among the Turks one can see the practice of praying over a ball of cotton, which is then unwrapped and from the threads one forms a circle through which a person, struck by black magic or spell, is passed through.

Threading (passing) through the amulet

According to Bosnian Imam’s the following instruction for the usage of a hollow amulet has been constructed:

-For an amulet to work the owner must pass it over him three times, or to wait for 21 days when it will start working by itself on him and his family.

-Traditions tied to this amulet stipulate that all family members have to pass the amulet three times over them, similarly, the ancient rules stipulate that each person is passed through it individually as many times as the person’s age, three days in a row, so that it has a full effect on them.

-Who ever believes in Allah, and possesses this amulet, will be protected from all troubles in this world, which are inflicted by people and demons. Three days in a row the person needs to be passed through the amulet three times.

-Whoever possesses this amulet, his provisions and good fortune will increase with god’s will.

-Whoever possesses this amulet, will be free from all suffering and ills which are caused by people and Jinn. For this purpose one needs to thread the amulet two times per month.

-Whoever carries this amulet will not fall ill from no great disease nor will have cholera. One needs to pass through the amulet every six months, seven times through the amulet for seven days.

-If one has a wish which is hard to achieve Allah will ease the realization of the wish if he passes through the amulet 11 times, between midnight and 1 o’clock in the morning.

-Whoever possesses this amulet will be protected by evil doers and their evil acts and similarly his property will be protected from the evil caused by people and Jinn.

-Whoever has this amulet will achieve all his goals and intentions with god’s help, and if he has issues with the court and court decisions, Allah will help him come out as the winner in all disputes which are aimed against him. In that case one needs to pass through the amulet 15 days in a row, three times a day.

-If someone falls ill from dangerous diseases such as a tumour, cancer, tuberculosis, etc. one needs to pass through the amulet 41 times for 41 days.

-When the temperature is raised among the persons who carry the amulet, one needs to pass through the amulet three times and with god’s help the temperature will disappear.

-This amulet is used for a lot of things which torture and haunt the person, it helps him come out as the winner, protects him from human and Jinn evil, evil doers, i.e. in one sentence it protects him and helps him fight 99 different ailments and troubles,  and similarly brings 99 different benefits such as health, good fortune, revenues, etc.

How to defend yourself from black magic

Bosnian stravarke (folk doctors) claim that there is no object or thing in this world that cannot be used for magic or spells. Not even the sacred books, religious paraphernalia or holy water are spared from that. Of course, despite this fact it is also necessary to note that only a small number of people are able to successfully perform magic and cast spells. Such persons, first of all, have to be mentally strong and able to maintain communication with the spirit world. Without these two conditions magic is not feasible.

Witch props are usually those items that are in daily use such as bread, water, coffee, sugar, scissors, needle, matches, thread, wool, etc. Often at first glance quite harmless little things outside the front door or below the threshold, pillows or toilet, that you would not even pay attention to, are actually charged magic props that emit negative energy.

Magic for home

Although I am not a supporter of the idea that the effect of magic is reflected in everything, nor that every even remotely suspicious object should be declared as an evil spell, it is my opinion that one should be careful about everything that is, especially in the morning, found at the entrance door or under the mat.

Since ancient times it is known that the entrance to the house is a particularly sensitive place for picking up any kind of magic, and therefore if you find the remains of the earth, blood, water, cat's or dog hairs, colored thread, etc., do not ignore them and consider them as a harmless coincidence or wind’s play.

It is very important to note that any such object found at the entrance door should not, under any circumstances, be brought into the house, nor touched with a hand. It is enough to sweep it with a broom on dustpan than throw it into dumpster. After that, the threshold and doorposts should be sprayed with wine vinegar, in order to fully neutralize any negative impact.

Magic charms are often brought into the house with the clear intention to attract evil spirits into that home and to fill it with negative energy. Continuous restlessness, sudden deterioration of household appliances, groundless arguments, frequent headaches or, most often, the feeling that you are everywhere more comfortable than at home, is a clear indication of the influence of supernatural forces. The best places to place magic spells are toilet or the bedroom where the victim of magic sleeps. Especially dangerous are those spells that are sewn into the pillow, as they directly affect the human psyche.

The best way to eliminate all of those spells that are found in the home, in the opinion of Bosnian stravarke, is this - all magic charms should be picked up and taken to a three-border point. That is the place where the three plots of land meet, and in its center one should dig a hole, put the magic charms in it and then cover them with soil.

According to stravarke, after that the person who made magic (witch) is completely blocked and can no longer do magic against you. Of course, after that it is very good to "clean" the house with exorcism water or by burning some proven incense, so that peace and prosperity can return to it.

The fire and water met

If you do not know where to turn for help, after you eliminated suspicious objects from the house, use this ritual. Go to a water spring and throw firstly three pieces of bread and a bit of salt in it, saying: "Holy water, great mother, I present you with bread and salt and you please give me what I ask of you - home peace and prosperity!" Then scoop some water and take it home. Throw nine live coals in it or burning matches and every time, while doing so, repeat:

The fire and water met
Enemy’s hands decayed!

This is, otherwise, a verse from a long exorcism spell pronounced by stravarke while forcing evil away, but it is enough for above described ritual. As soon as you remove the coals or matches from the water, use the water to spray the walls of the whole apartment or house.

Another useful advice on how to protect your home from magic and spirits, and somehow make it hard for their invasion, is not to allow the moonlight to "enter" into the house. In the nights of the full moon draw the opaque curtain over the window, drop the blinds or shutters. Moonlight is the strongest carrier of the magical forces and spirits use it many times to enter into the house and with them enters the magic. That is why it is typical for sensible persons to suffer from restlessness, insomnia or nightmares.

Demonic possession through dolls from grave

According to my opinion, but also by experience, the most serious forms of magic are those made with fresh soil from graves. In my research I found some interesting stories told by some stravarke, who revealed intriguing details about the rituals of black magic among the Bosnian people. Sihirbaza (witch) wanting to hurt her enemy is waiting for someone from neighborhood to die and on the same night, after the burial, goes to that grave completely naked and straddles it like a horse.

After some time that she spent muttering mysterious words, she stand up, grab the soil from the grave, as much as it is enough to make a miniature clay doll. In that soil she than put some characteristic sign of the person against whom she is preparing the spell, such as the footprint, the thread from clothes or something else. After that she is splashing the soil  with cow’s urine and blood of a black hen, and mixing it with the soil, spitting on it three times saying:

Such will you NN also vomit and urinate blood, every day until he die!

After she formed a human figure from the soil she takes it and buries it under a dry stump or under an old tree that slowly dries. According to the testimony of stravarka, the person who is a target of such a magic spell gets ill in a very short period and dies unless he gets help.

Studying described ritual I found out that it is based on the obsessions, i.e. that sihirbaza tries to connect the spirit of a deceased person with the victim of magic by the soil as medium, so that the spirit would possess the victim and cause the illness, madness or even death. Of course, goes without saying that these and similar rituals are extremely dangerous because they are based on control of the spirit of the dead person.

Also, sitting or lying on the grave is characteristic ritual gesture of Arabic magic. Namely, the witches are most inclined to visit the graves of people who, during their lifetime, held a prominent position or post, such as a judge, because of the belief that extremely strong jinn like to visit such graves. Sitting naked on the grave the witch allows the demons of the grave to possess her, and in return some of her wishes shall be fulfilled, especially these related to black magic.

Curing and living with the energy that surrounds us

From its inception until today, man is advancing in all fields and that advancement is in full swing. An exception is made on the plane of the paranormal, i.e. beyond sensory perception, in which man is constantly regressing. Today this ability is possessed only by rare individuals, which can receive some information which didn’t come through one of their five senses. Gradually man lost touch with nature, almost by the same tempo by which he obtained new abilities and skills. Each step in advancement meant giving up one part of the connection with nature and its gradual quenching.

While man was in contact with nature, his soul and consciousness were open towards spiritual energies. During the period when naked and barefoot he wandered nature in search of food, information from higher dimensions were food was located were valuable to him, as well as information about shelter or danger. With the advancement of civilization, he neglected more and more the directions for a harmonized life which came to him from higher dimensions. In such a manner, man became insensitive to very subtle information, which she still receives through his aura, but which he no longer registers, with the exception of rare individuals.

Long time ago in prehistory humans possessed an ability of healing with their hands i.e. fingers and palms. They would hold their hand on the aching spot with the desire to help themselves and so they eased the pain, healed wounds and diseased. We need to emphasise, diseases in prehistoric men were rare. They were usually virus and bacterial infections or bodily injuries, as today in animals. Women gave birth easily, and when someone would get sick, he knew the cause of his disease. Since, man at the time, just like animals lived in harmony with nature. Though with the slow advent of medicine the ancient wisdom of healing was suppressed, it never completely disappeared and people never stopped practicing it. A good part of that knowledge is described by Hindu teaching about Mudra (mudra – in Sanskrit it literally translates as gift of happiness), but similar methods can be found in Buddhism and countries with a rich cultural tradition such as Japan, China, Tibet, Malaysia and Indonesia, in Egyptian culture but also in Bosnia.

Namely in Bosnian occult tradition it is claimed that there are two cardinal spots on every human being which represent a kind of portals through which energy flows and through which every human is connected to the spiritual world. We’re talking about the forehead, actually the middle of the forehead, and the belly button. Ever since our Illyrian forefathers there is a belief that every man in the depths of space possesses his own star i.e. habitat of the soul, to which he is connected through his forehead. While the forehead is connected to the spiritual world, the belly button connects us to the material world, since our inception in the mother’s womb, and has therefore an exceptional influence on our destiny. But, similarly as man is receiving and sending energy from himself, in whose transmission the hands have the largest role to play.

Power of a human hand

As already written, our hands, tips of fingers and our palms, have an outstanding ability to receive and send energy. That’s why we shouldn’t be amazed that we have lines on our palms and that our fingers are adorned by a unique imprint which confirms the primordial thesis that we all are unique beings, whose body is nothing else but a condensed energy, the same energy we call life.

Knowledge about the manipulation with that energy was never completely lost, it is present in numerous segments but people today have difficulty in recognising it and even greater difficulty in understanding it. Ritual movement of hands and feet are an ancient practice in Bosnian occult tradition. The following examples from practice show how knowledgeable were stravarke in the basis of energy’s magic.

Namely, as a stravarke Ajša B. told me once while she is uttering exorcist formulas it will not have a healing effect if the person which is being healed has his legs or arms crossed. Allegedly, the person is blocking itself and prevents the transfer of energy.

It is interesting to mention that people still today, especially older women, are afraid of those guests who enter the house holding their arms crossed behind their back and once they enter the home they cross their hands on their chest. With this, according to experienced stravarke they’re practicing black magic and invoking evil and bad luck to that family. That’s why the housewife should repeat this short formula which will prevent them in their intent and better yet reverse the evil:

What you are thinking and doing,
you shall see it on your body,
if god wills, veledalin amin!

Refusing or stopping the transfer of negative energy in Bosnia was well known in the middle ages, probably in the ancient age, and the proof that our forefathers the Bogomil were acquainted with the rules of energy magic is best presented on the reliefs of individual tombstones – raised right hand, palm facing the observe, while the left hand is behind the back.

Namely, as Bosnian stravarke claim if we turn the palm of the right hand towards a negative person, to observe them through spread fingers of the hand, that person then won’t be able to hurt us with an evil gaze or thoughts. Actually, we are disabling the transfer of negative energy i.e. magical attack.

However, the palm also has incredible healing properties. From experience it is familiar that every man, as soon as he feels pain places his palm immediately on the painful place with the desire to ease the pain. This reaction is instinctive. If a man feels back pain, he won’t think about placing his hand on his back, the hand will go by itself without him thinking about it. That is a reflex similar to the one which makes our eyes blink when something flies towards our face. All people hold their hand on a painful spot, even both hands if the pain is stronger. If the pain is unbearable, people press that place. Often times we can see a diseased unconsciously massaging the painful place on a leg or some other part of the body wanting to use ritual movement to “break” the pain with a massage and energy of the palm.

No one is asking themselves why is this so and if there is some purpose behind this, however I believe that most people would say that they feel better while holding their hand on the painful spot. That’s because people have the ability to heal with the help of life energy, which comes from space, since prehistory, but only rare individuals can use it consciously. We need to mention an important thing which is – every man can cure with his palms, no matter the age, from a small child to an old man. Education level is unimportant, intelligence, social status, neither race, nationality nor religion.

Fingers – energetic tentacles

Since our birth, and probably before that, we use our hands and fingers in order to coordinate them with our brain, which receives our messages through nerve endings on our fingers which we send and in such a manner it harmonizes with energy. In such a way the body is communicating with the mind with the goal of establishing a natural balance. A child in its earliest phase of life experiences first senses and cognition through its fingers which is an inborn human technique of learning. Fingers of a small child are often spread since in such a manner it receives the necessary energy from the world which surrounds it, and while it is sleeping it often sucks on its thumb.

A new-born baby hold their thumb in their mouths while sleeping in order to substitute the energy of the belly button through which they were connected with their mother. Thumb is therefore a symbol of a mother (female – life energy), while the other four fingers, somewhat divided from the thumb, symbolise male energy. In Islamic tradition they are represented through prophet Muhammad, son in law Alija and his sons Hussein and Hassan. Together the five of them represent a holy family presented through a well-known amulet “hand of Hazrat Fatima” or shortened “Fatima’s hand”, for which it was believed that it is universal since it protects from evil and also draws good fortune, business opportunities and helps in love. Besides, the middle finger of the hand signifies our consciousness, index finger our identity and beliefs, ring finger emotions and pinkie subconscious mind.

Finger and magic

Thumb of the right hand in Bosnian magic is called the strongest finger and that’s why it is used in numerous exorcist rituals, for example, when a mother wants to remove the effect of spellbound eyes, she would wet her right thumb with the saliva from her mouth and she would then stroke the child’s forehead uttering this basma:

Cast a spell, got him hooked,
with my formula it recedes,
if god wills, amen!

At the end of the ritual she touches the heel on her right foot three times with the thumb, with this she is signalling, ritually, the departure of evil.

Similarly, in love magic a woman which wants to tie her man down with passion and lust will take a sugar cube and a new sowing needle. First she stabs her right thumb with the needle and places a drop of blood on the sugar cube. She then stabs the thumb of her left leg, then the thumb of her left hand and in the end the thumb of her right leg. Each time she places a drop of blood on the sugar cube, the sugar cube will be placed into the husband’s coffee for him to drink. Ritually the process of intersection is actually an allusion to overlapping or crossing of two bodies, two hearts and two souls. The spell is based on the belief in the great love power from the blood of female fingers (thumbs), which can stimulate passion and intimate closeness of partners.

Magical influence of other fingers is not negligible, for example, the pinkie on the right hand is especially lucky when it comes to commerce. According to one famous craftsman from Sarajevo, Ćamil K. it is known that there are customers versed in the secrets of magic and they’re using certain ritual actions in order to lower prices of items. They touch the desired item three times, in secret, with the pinkie of their right hand. If we wet the tip of our middle finger with saliva and with it we stroke our partners lips we will stimulate desire and passion, etc.

Connecting fingers into a circle

Fingers are used individually or all together, as in examples of love magic where one wants to create feelings of closeness and desire for intimacy by looking at the desired person through spread apart fingers. The most important characteristic of fingers are the tips which transfer energy, which can be demonstrated by citing an example from spiritual medicine. Imam or a spiritual healer which wants to transfer beneficial power of the prayer onto water, would submerge the fingers of his right hand into the water and he would then pray. Such water, charged with positive energy is later consumed by the diseased in order to cleanse his body from negative energy.

What is especially important to note is that it is necessary to be acquainted with a very simple ritual which can be performed by connecting the tip of one finger with the other. Of course, you should know that in every exercise the fingers are always connected i.e. they touch the tips in order to form a shape of a circle – symbol of life energy, one which is constantly renewing itself.

For starters I’ll mention a couple of exercises which you can practice in order to convince yourself that you can help yourself.  For example, when we connect the fingertips of one hand with the other we harmonise energy in ourselves. In such a way we easily achieve calmness of our mind, we strengthen concentration and attention is focused on our heart and breathing. With these simple movements we slowly get the ability to see issues in a new light and find a solution for it. If we connect fingertips of one hand in one cup, and we do the same with the other hand, then we’re consciously creating a blockade which prevents the influence of someone else’s energy towards us.

Middle finger signifies the head and consciousness. Connecting fingertips of the thumb and index finger we influence our consciousness, we “feed” it with energy and regenerate it. It is an extremely important exercise for students or people exposed to great stress.

Pinkie is connected to our subconscious mind but also the afterlife, which is shown by practice of breaking a boys pinkie who died uncircumcised. When we’re emotionally unstable, unlucky, depressed then it is desirable to connect the thumb with the pinkie, especially right thumb with the left pinkie, so that the tips of fingers are touching.

Between the thumb and index finger the zone of the stomach is located. Touching that part of the body, folk healers are checking whether people have stomach issues. Old Bosnian women had a custom of pulling one finger at a time while repeating prayer Fatiha, a few times in a row, each finger individually “dragging” it forward. When they finish these movements with both hands, they shake their fingers. With this simple process, which could be called a massage, they favourably influence circulation and metabolism.

People of sealed fate or blocked luck

There have always been men and women who remained unmarried through their whole lives and among people are known under names: the old guy or old maid, a spinster, old girl, and so on. The reasons for such a fate are different and they are sometimes the result of poor living conditions, great childhood trauma, congenital frigidity, homosexual tendencies, sexual abuse, or even certain mental health problems.

But what about those who do not belong to any of the said groups and yet failed to make any serious relationship let alone the marriage? Bosnian people traditionally believe that only the person who wanted so remained alone, because when someone sincerely wants to have his/her suppose he/she is not so choosy. However, is that really so?

Before we get into analyzing the “sealed fate” we have to separate this unnatural phenomenon from today’s modern life trend, in which extremely poor economic situation and extremely unstable living environment results in an increased percentage of individuals who consciously choose not to marry or establish family. There, we cannot talk about “sealed fate” but only about personal will and decision.

The greatest enemy – love

Since ancient times there are stories among people that there are individuals with a “sealed fate” or luck. Despite the attractive appearance, eloquence, social status, a university education, family pedigree, material situatedness, or some other desirable condition these people do not have serious success in love ?! In short, for them - love is the greatest enemy.

It is likely that you yourself know such a person who has had dozens of unsuccessful relationships that have all ended in one way or another, comic or tragic, but always with the same result. With all the undertaken efforts or interest, very often their relationships "broke overnight" or their engagement and weddings were cancelled without an actual reason.

While in the last century early marriages were popular and parenthood was exercised already in the early twenties, this trend has, within relatively short period, moved forward for ten years, so it is now the most normal thing to enter into marriage and also to exercise motherhood in thirties. This is why young people in their thirties can no longer be considered as persons with “sealed fate”, but only those of older ages.

Accidental and intentional reasons

There are many people in this world for which parents have accidentally selected a name that does not match their destiny and as such is blocking their life happiness and energy. Sometimes the name is so negative that the child is constantly sick and poorly develops and as long as the name is not changed, it has neither health nor progress.

Wrongly selected name, according to the spiritual experts, magnetically attract dark forces and spells which then further complicate person’s destiny and makes him susceptible to all negativities and especially to “sealed happiness”.

This is why, in order to detect if a person is a victim of “sealed happiness” her name and name of one parent are being converted into a single-digit number – the answer. This information is crucial in order to undertake a ritual or make a talisman.

Besides, there are other predispositions to enter into this negative category. Namely, the people have always considered girls with lush hair and bright eyes as the most often victims of spells that blocked their luck and made them a lot of problems in emotional life.

It is wrong to believe that a person's "sealed fate" is the result of God's punishment (curse) because God neither hates nor punishes anyone, and even less he listens to human evil desires and requests. God is a pure Good and absolute Love and everything that happens to people is exclusively the result of human evil that manifests itself through negative thoughts, words and deeds - spells, curses and witchcraft.

What characterizes person of “sealed happiness" is a feeling of indifference or, as some of stravarke  like to say: such a person sometimes feels "neither as a male or a female", no matter her actual sex. In addition, there is feeling of depression, anxiety, aggression, distraction. Very often, the symptoms tend to be physical so that a person often suffers from headache, has a sensation of suffocation in the chest, or has bloating stomach for no reason.

Seven ways of happiness

It should be noted that in the past girls were more affected by “sealed fate”, while today there is no difference between boys and girls. Therefore, there's probably a lot more ways to help the girl to unseal the happiness than for a man.

For a girl who has sealed destiny, in order to find her chosen one, a magical inscription for unsealing the fate has to be ordered. Girl who wears this inscription for 40 days will have her fait unsealed and thus shall be relieve from misfortune. However, the imperative is that the inscription has to be ordered by parents or one of the girl’s close relatives, because she should not know about it. Even when the desired result is achieved, the discretion about the origin and purpose of the record must be respected.

The person who is ordering inscription had to secretly take seven hairs from the girl of “sealed fate” and bring them to the one making the magical inscription (talisman or zapis), usually to Hodza (Mullah) or Dervish “of good reputation” – who is famous among the people for his power and skills. Each of the hair Mullah individually coats with wax and bent into the form of fork. When this is done with all the hairs, he wraps them into a paper on which is written a male name. Each paper he wraps into linoleum and then in a piece of green cloth that he ties. At the end the seven bundles have to be buried on seven different roads, and by that the first part of the ritual is completed.

After this, Mullah is looking at the stars and horoscope signs. He says a short prayer from the Quran and blew in the direction of the girl's house. Only then he starts with writing of the magical inscription for the unsealing of happiness. The one who ordered the inscription brings it to the girl and give her instruction to carry it around the neck, under the pretext that it is a lucky charm. The real purpose must not be discovered. It is important that after the marriage the girl continues to carry the inscription around the neck and that she is not allowed to open it and show it to her husband.

Very good result gives the ritual with the tread and the padlock, when a person is measured from head to foot. After the magic ritual was performed the tread is being put into the padlock and locked. The padlock is then given to a person of "sealed fate" who has to, on the night of the new moon, unlocked it on the river bank and throw it into the water.

Another good way to "unseal the fate" is the smelting of lead. Special exorcism formulas that are uttered over a bowl with water and smelting molten lead neutralize extremely detrimental effect of blocked luck. If among lead figures appear a figure in the form of angel, this is a sure sign that spells and rituals were successful.

By the allegations of stravarke (folk doctors), when unsealing the fate, it is always easier to help persons in their thirties than to those of the older ages.

“Hand of Hazrat Fatima” (Anastatica hierochuntica)

This plant is well known across the Middle East, from Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria but also other parts of the Islamic world, such as Indonesia or Malaysia. It has numerous names but the majority of the plant is called hand i.e. kaff or rumpuh: Shajarat al-khalas, Akar Fatimah, Kaff e Fatima, Rumpuh Fatimah, Sanggul Fatima, and in some places it is called kaff Maryam (Mary’s palm), Chastity tree or Rose of Jericho, Dinosaur plant, Palestinian Tumbleweed, Resurrection, True Rose, etc.

It’s Latin name is Anastatica hierochuntica and is classified as an annual plant from the family Brassicaceae. After blooming it shrivels up and gets a form of a round head which is blown away by the desert wind; under the influence of water (moisture) it unfurls, throws out a seed which germinates and gets rooted immediately.

Among the Arab people numerous legends have been told some of which are tied to Maria and others to Fatima, sometimes even Hava (Eve) is mentioned, and out of all of this one can easily conclude that we’re talking about a female plant, whose symbolism rests on fertility. It is evident that we’re talking about a holly plant of paganism, dedicated to a female deity of fertility, which was replaced during monotheism by Maria i.e. Fatima. Researching her role in the ancient times I discovered that she was actually dedicated to the Persian goddess of rain and fertility Tir, which is evidenced by one magical formula.

Her particularity is that it can allegedly survive for a few centuries, until it receives an excessive amount of water, which was another reason for creation of the cult for this plant. Probably because of all of the above a cult was created around her, based on the belief that it possesses numerous magical, healing but also practical abilities. Namely, it is believed that if it is placed underneath a bed it will remove insomnia. It has a characteristic to repel mosquitoes with its smell, while dry, but when it absorbs water it moisturizes air inside a room and absorbs smoke.

It helps with birth but also in curing cancer

In traditional Arabic medicine for this plant, it is believed that it possesses various beneficial therapeutic properties; it helps with low circulation in hands and legs, pain in joints, neutralizes gases inside the body, stabilises uric acid in the body (gout), helps in normalising cholesterol, raises immunity, helps with skin diseases, etc. Similarly, it is considered that it helps with regulating menstrual cycles, that it reduces menstrual cramps, raises the level of female hormones, speeds up recovery after birth and some claim that it is ideal for loosing weight.

The plant can apparently even cure cancer, a lighter stroke and high blood pressure. Method of treatment is pretty simple and is based on drinking water. Above a bowl of warm water one utters at least 200 times Fatiha and Ayatul Kursi which is then drunk three times daily, or until it is completely drunk.

When it is used for the purpose of helping during birth then there is a rule that it shouldn’t be submerged in boiling or hot water, because of the belief that it can cause stricture of the womb and close the child’s path i.e. complicate birth. The bush is submerged in fresh water over night or is held in a vessel with water 1-3 days, so that the roots can absorb enough water and spread. After a successful birth the plant was usually given to the child as a gift, as a symbol of health and happiness in the family.

Traditionally among the Arabs, Turks, Malaysians, Iranians, Indonesians it was used as a medium for strengthening intuition and self-confidence. The bush was placed in water and when the root has opened up, one repeats the prayer Ihlas or Fatiha 100 times, blowing each time into the bush, and in the end the water is drunk with the prayer to Allah to help with plans and future business.

Ritual for annulling evil

On Tuesday or Saturday, place Hazrat Fatima hand in a black metal bowl with water. Light a white candle next to it and repeat Ayatul Kursi three times. Repeat this procedure three days in a row. On the third day, place the water from the bowl into a bottle from which you will sprinkle from the outside the entrance door in the house and utter Ayatul Kursi. With that you will neutralise the effect of spellbound eyes and all other evil from your home.

Rue – plant which one nurtures better than a child

Sedefil, sedef or sedefat, also known as rue, Latin name Ruta graveolens, is the most famous plant in magical tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its purpose is manifold, it is used to cleanse living space, repel parasites, and is used to clean the human body and spirit from negative thoughts and energy. Rue is a plant whose origins are from the Mediterranean region and it grows well in dry conditions. It naturally has an inclination towards sunlight. In BiH it is used for its peculiar fragrance as well as a fly and mosquito repellent and traditionally one stem is left inside a wardrobe.

Among the Illyrians, Greeks and Romans rue was used for the expulsion of negative energy and for curing various health issues. Remnants of these ancient beliefs are present in folk medicine where, for example, it is claimed that rue successfully cures all heart ailments, etc.

Even Shakespeare uses a peculiar name for sedefil “holly plant of the Sunday” because of the ritual practice that its stem is dipped in water and is used to spray people with water who were believed to be possessed by evil spirits. Curiously, when it comes to this plant, certain Mediterranean cultures it is profusely used in cooking because its leaves are rich in vitamin C. In Bosnia and Croatia, sedefil is added to schnapps, in order to get a cure for better digestion.

Plant against disease and evil

Sedefil is from the family Rutaceae, it is rich in silicic acid, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenol and numerous other substances which are used in pharmacy. With all of these benefits, sedefil is used when one gets poisoned by henbane, it is also a great remedy for bad breath. In natural healing sedefil is used to help the kidneys, bladder, intestines and inside of the ear. It can also be used for eye infections, constipation, sciatica, asthma, headaches, dermatitis and stroke. However, one needs to be careful when using rue and use it in appropriate doses, since if one overdoses a completely opposite effect is achieved. Pregnant women and those women which want to get pregnant should avoid consuming any part of this plant.

Besides its healing properties, rue possesses amazing power against evil, mostly because of its fragrance but also unusual appearance of the leaves which remind us of a human hand, i.e. five fingers. It was reason enough for it to receive a reputation as a plant against evil along the entire Mediterranean coast. That’s why in BiH rue is traditionally grown alongside a house, close to the entrance door, because of the old belief that in such a way, with its vicinity, it protects the home from spells, spirits and magic. A few leaves of this plant were usually placed under the pillow of children as a protection against spellbound eyes. Still today old women before autumn would gather the hard seed of rue and make so called “tespih” (beads) out of 33 beads, by using a needle and a string, they would tie it and place on a wall of a house, so that the beads would bring good luck into the house.

A faery fell asleep on a leaf of rue

In Bosnian mythology rue is a plant dedicated to good faeries. According to folk belief faeries love to sleep on the leaf of this plant because of its specific fragrance. It is probably corroborated by certain women’s love formulas, which are uttered while holding a stem of rue. In one of them, a girl which wants to be noticed wherever she shows up and with that have more suitors, would first bathe in order to wash away all the dirt from herself and then naked and wet, with her hair down, she takes a pre prepared stem of rue and a dish with warm water. First she pours some water in her mouth and holding it in her mouth, in her mind, she repeats the prayer Ihlas nine times. After that she spits the water out of her mouth back into the dish with warm water. Then she places the stem of rue and utters this magical formula:

On the leaf of a rue a fairy fell asleep,
from her it spilt over onto me
gold, silver and silk.
Gold, gilded me,
silver cleansed me
silk wrapped and a fairy blessed me;
to be healthy and happy,
to everyone in the world the best and prettiest,
veledalin amin from God amin!

Bosnian:

Na listu sedefila zaspala vila,
sa nje se na me prosulo
zlato, srebro i svila.
Zlato me pozlatilo,
srebro očistilo,
svila obavila a vila blagosila
da budem zdrava i čila,
najbolja i najljepša svakom ja bila!
Veledalin amin od Boga amin!

After repeating this formula three times the girl blows into the water and washes herself from head to toe with it and lets the water pour down her. With that the ritual would be completed. From the bottom of the bathtub she picks up the stem of rue and after she is dressed she throws it out, somewhere where no human foot goes. Stravarke claim that with this spell cleanses the girl from spellbound eyes, hate and envy, and her kismet or fortune can open up, if it was closed. If she is completely unlucky in love, then it is believed that her “kismet is closed”, and then this ritual must be repeated three Tuesdays in a row and her luck will be opened any time soon and she will find her future husband.

Rue doesn’t just help girls to find luck in love but also to married women, especially ones whose husbands are unfaithful. From the old days in the north-western part of Bosnia there was a custom that a wife whose husband is unfaithful, whenever she washes her bra or panties, she would dry them on a rue bush, and then she would wear them. Allegedly, the plant will put a spell on the underwear with its fragrance which will make the woman attractive and desirable to her husband and he will be dedicated only to her.

Substitute for incense

Another unusual characteristic of rue is that it can be a substitute for incense. Namely, in talisman magic it is advised that instead of incense one should burn a few dry leaves of rue, together with the amulet, and with that smoke the diseased is to be fumigated, a person which is suffering from attacks of spirits or black magic. Along with that, the constructors of amulets after they have finished writing and start folding the amulet in its characteristic triangular or square form, they place a few leaves of dry rue in order to increase the power of their text and in order to ensure immunity from evil to the owner of the amulet. Because of all of the enumerated specifics of this plant it is important to mention the frequent statement of Bosnian stravarke that “rue should be nurtured better than a child because of its usefulness!”.

With dry leaves of rue one should fumigate the entire house or apartment at least once a year, in order to chase away all negativity and spells that the space has “absorbed” over time with visits of guests and family members. Namely, every time we go out into the streets we risk when coming into contact with other people or simply by stepping into unwanted negative elements whose span is varied, from various impurities such as urine, blood, trash all the way to purposefully spilt dirty water on the street, which one used to ritually wash away black magic from himself, and spilt the water for a random passer-by to cross the place and pick up all the evil. When a home is filled with negative energy then one can experience unreasonable friction, unrest, nervousness, there is no peace and money is lost and in the end discord and quarrel appear in a family.
Fumigation is performed in such a manner when a fistful of dried leaves of this plant are thrown on a few hot embers and with the smoke created from combustion goes through the entire house. While the smoke is spread throughout the rooms one needs to utter this spell three times:

Whatever the enemy brought,
rue brought it back to him,
the house goes up the hill,
all evil with this smoke flies away from the house,
the house stayed clean, all evil fell away,
with my formula and god’s will, amin!

Bosnian:

After the house has been fumigated the windows and doors can be open so that negative energy can go outside and stay there. Residue from coal and dust, after they have cooled down, are brought to a crossroad and thrown there. with that the ritual of fumigation is done.

Miraculous talismans

The use of amulets was justified by a saying of Mohammed: "There is no wrong in using charms and spells so long as you do not associate anything with God."

According to the sayings of numerous Sheiks, but also other prominent spiritual authorities, there is no religious hurdle for a talisman to be used in a healing treatment, especially with spiritual diseases.

Talismans cure numerous issues and diseases caused by evil invisible creatures, various bodily diseases, madness, blindness, epilepsy, for which it is claimed among the Bosnian folk that it most frequently appears in surroundings where there is the highest concentration of black magic, headaches, infertility, depression, unknown diseases, high blood pressure, etc. Also, talismans can be used to positively influence lawsuits, when searching for a job, to return a loved person, finding your soul mate, calming down marital disputes and the like.

The name amulet (hamail) and talisman (tilsum or talsam) come from the Arabic language and through Greeks, like many other terms they came into Europe and got domesticated in dictionaries and tradition. Talismans are considered to be more powerful than prayers since they have the specificity to prolong the effect of god’s holly words, which disperse after a prayer, while if written they accumulate and shine their power for a long time and achieve a much stronger effect.

An ancient rule is that talismans are created using an ink made out of saffron, in which one can add an explicit note of perfume or a few drops of rose water. The reason for this is of course practical and it is based on the belief that good beings, primarily angels, respond to a call which has a pleasant smell. That’s why it is forbidden to eat garlic or onions before a prayer and before creating a talisman or amulet, physical impurity and all those things which have to do with tidiness and pleasant sensations.

In rituals of talisman or amulet creation, fumigation is inevitable. Application of fragrances is a constituent of middle eastern religious-magical teachings and that segment is found in the tradition of BiH. Namely, in Bosnian mythology a legend about the big celestial bird is mentioned Haramki which was convicted by Allah, because of its arrogance, to be constantly in flight, without the possibility of landing on earth or a tree. In the past our grandparents had a custom of pealing an apple or orange, and place the peel on the hot stove to feed the celestial bird with that smoke and to do a good deed.

Numerous rules and advice

For fumigation during the use of talismans, but also after it, oriental textbooks of talisman magic often require the use of fragranced resins, roots and incense which are inaccessible for our climate and it is necessary to be more agile and find high quality substitutes which will not disturb the content of the talisman and its purpose. Bosnian experts for amulet creation have found an ideal substitute in pine needles (Pinus) whose smell summons spiritual energy.

Like everything else, most people understand the talisman science only superficially and they believe that it is enough to re-write some content with a plain pencil, at no specific time, and then they wonder why the talisman didn’t work?! The biggest mistake is done by those who write verses of Qur’an with a ballpoint pen, since a percentage of the ink in such pencils has alcohol in it, which is strictly forbidden by the Qur’an. With this their amulets can be a tool of some evil forces and bring more issues than good to the owner. Because of insufficient education in spiritual science the so called masters of talisman science, besides knowingly deceiving their clients, they also attract evil forces which sooner or later overtake them and place their sphere of influence over them.

There are days in every lunar or Arabic month which are evil and negative and one shouldn’t practice talisman sciences during those months. Similarly, one needs to know the astrological sign in which the future owner of the talisman is born, since there are rules there as well about inscription days. The only exception is the sign of the Leo, for which there are no restrictions for any of the lunar months. With that, the inscriber must follow the movements of the houses of the moon (stations), so he is informed about the state in the sky, which is not always benevolent towards actions and undertakings on earth.

In order to create a usable talisman one must follow numerous rules from the precise hour, day, smell, prayer, etc. Similarly, talismans mustn’t be written in certain days and before one even starts to think about it one must check, according to the date of birth, which days are not favourable for that person i.e. in which days one cannot write talismans for it. Actually, I would like to tell you shortly that creation of amulets is not an easy task and besides knowledge it also requires physical effort. That’s why there are only a few good creators of talismans and they’re in no hurry, each client is marked and on hold until the necessary conditions for work for that specific amulet are created. An amulet whose content is nothing more than useless squiggly lines, copied text or a text written with a ballpoint pen is useless and they have no real power.

Today it is similarly possible to see in printed media, other media as well, ads in which women, so called clairvoyants or “witches” claim that they create amulets and talismans and with that they publicly reveal that they don’t even have the basic knowledge about the talisman science. Namely, in Arabic-Persian science about amulets it is strictly emphasized that a woman cannot create an amulet, only a man cam. Reasons for this are clear and justified and the most basic one is that a woman due to her menstrual cycle and birth simply doesn’t have a high enough level of cleanliness to satisfy extremely demanding rules. It is no less important to emphasize another fact for which women are ostracised from talisman magic. Namely, Jinn cultivate a special affinity towards human females and they’re trying to get close to them in every possible way, in order to possess them and feed from the smell of the menstrual blood or even worse to sexually fornicate with them while they’re sleeping. From everything that we said it is easy to conclude that most of those women which perform some type of magic are possessed with one or more invisible beings. Such women often have headaches, “stinging” across the back, sudden pain, have menstrual issues, nightmares,…

As instructions requires individual talismans are left overnight outside after they have been written, in order to “absorb” astral light, or they are hung on a tree branch, buried near a river or stream, burned in a fire and the ashes are placed on a palm and scattered by the wind, etc. Besides, there are warnings which talismans cannot be exposed to sun or moon light, which cannot be near a dog, woman and the like.

Amulet – protection from evil people

It is necessary to write something about amulets as well, whose main and only purpose is to protect us from all forms of negative energy and evil. Before creation of an amulet it is advisable to check with the help of the method of spiritual numerology if the client is especially young, “open” or “closed” destiny or luck, since in the case of a positive answer one must write a talisman for opening of destiny or better to say – freeing life energy. In my opinion an amulet is necessary to us all so that a person could thread securely through life without danger of being blocked by some negative energy. When there are no such obstacles a man can use his potential and abilities without issues in order to get by in life. Of course there are lazy people, without a desire to fight or work, and to those people not even an amulet can change their destiny for the better, since they themselves don’t desire a change.

The most frequent effect of negative energy on a human being is not manifested in a sensational way it is usually perfidious and hidden. Under the influence of magic, spells, possession or something else a person is losing energy too quickly, he suddenly droops and is faint, he doesn’t feel like doing anything, is sleepy and without desire. When he decides to do something, he starts and gives up quickly. They are usually the most frequent symptoms of someone being under the influence of evil.

Of course, besides the mentioned other indicators can appear such as frequent headaches, bad sleep, loss of immunity and the like. In order to get rid of it, it is necessary to “close” holes in the aura through which invisible entities drain human life energy and one needs to renew and strengthen energetic field. This can be achieved in numerous ways but through tradition of spiritual medicine amulets have been shown as the most effective. In the practical part of elimination and cleansing from evil small, content short talismans have been shown to be the most effective, these talismans are usually written by saffron ink mixed with rose water, the amulets are submerged into a bottle of clear water and the water is then drunk. Usually this water is drunk three days in a row, in the morning and evening, when the body is cleansed from negative energy and is slowly returning to harmony.

In contrast, amulet which will be carried on the body or kept above the sheets on the wall can be written by coloured ink, usually red, black or green, whose content cannot be seen by the future owner. Actually, besides the creator of the amulet, no one can see the content of the amulet. The reason for such a relationship is that forces of good are summoned when the amulet is written and between the inscriber and the forces there cannot be a third person. Namely, in the ritual of amulet creation, clean materials are stressed i.e. clean energies: one writes on an unused paper, incense and a new white candle is being lit, the time of inscription is dawn, the purest part of the day, the inscriber must be physically clean, etc. The one constructing the amulet cannot be brought into danger that a presence of someone can violate the spiritual harmony and to invalidate all of his efforts, which can happen easily if the client is in the state of physical impurity or under the influence of negative energy.

Regular alms giving (sadaka) is an inseparable segment of talisman magic. In Bosnian tradition there is a belief about the term “nafakali ruka” or “lucky hand” – which is tied to successful stravarke or Imam’s. It is claimed that they with the help of God can help anyone who asks for their help and they are very successful in curing and chasing away evil from humans. One mustn’t be stingy or greedy since nothing on this beautiful planet is ours, we are here only temporarily, and that’s why we cannot usurp something which doesn’t belong to us. The essence of love and life is in sharing and helping, what makes us human in the end, and with which we are summoning great amounts of positive energy. It helps us feel better, to be happier and healthier, to handle life challenges much more easily, look better, be less under stress, attract positive people, etc. Mainly, benefits are many fold.

Remember, a stingy man is not a good believer nor a good soul. They are energetically destructive people for their environment and usually all those people which are in contact with them have a closed destiny i.e. it is blocked. They are the carriers of bad energy and often times it occurs that anyone who does business with them in any way suffers a series of bad luck and losses. Among the people it is usually said that they are “heavy” – bad tempered and full of negative energy. It is recommended to have an amulet because of these people.

I’m enumerating all these things informatively to first and foremost warn those individuals which for some reason, usually material, want to deal with this doctrine, they should initially study the theory and understand the responsibility and danger which comes with this miraculous skills, for which I believe stems from the ancient cult of communication with invisible beings, which existed from the dawn of mankind.

Power of the prayer from the Qur'an

There is a widespread prejudice about the Qur'an, especially among the members of other religions or people who have never read the holly book, since one can foretell destinies with the book (“opening the stars”) or even that in the content of the book there are instructions on how to create spells?! Both the first and second claim are false since the mantic skill “opening the stars” is not done with the Qur’an, instead it is done with a book called Yildiznama. Similarly, we should point out that the holly book of Islam, like the Torah and Bible, condemns any type of magic.

Practice of using prayers with the intent of creating amulets is present in all religions, and among the Christians and Jews use of the psalm for creation of inscriptions for a specific purpose.
Therefore, shortly, there are no differences between these three religions in terms of talisman and amulet creation. The only difference is perhaps that the Arabs and Iranians as excellent mathematicians perfected the science behind the talisman, primarily for the purpose of healing, using prayers from the Qur’an.

Islamic spiritual medicine or Al-Ruhanyat  is based on the science of beautiful names of the Lord (al-asma al-husna) and knowledge of the secret of Allah’s greatest name (al-ism al-akbar); esoteric interpretation of the verses from the Qur’an (ilm al-ta’wil); science of letters (ilm al huruf) and their numerological significance and meaning and science of magical squares (ilm al-awfaq) according to which the holly texts, their letters and numerological significance are entered through vefk (triangles and squares) in the content of the talisman and amulet.

Besides, Arabic language is considered to be chosen by God and that’s why words from the Qur’an, as well as citations and prayers are considered as holly. Also, this is the main reason why Muslims of all nations across the world pray to God in Arabic. Of course, it is not wrong for believers to pray in their native language since, as spiritual authorities claim, there are angels which translate the prayer into Arabic as soon as it is spoken. But, speaking the prayer in the original language of the Qur’an has precedence and is common practice among Muslims.

It is known that since the old days that prayers from the Qur’an are the source of help for various human ills and among them the one which is considered the heart of the holly book is very esteemed – Yaseen. It is claimed that it can help in finding a lost person, curing diseases, finding candidates for marriage, etc. In this prayer there is a citation which serves as a stimulus for flow of money but also property protection, which needs to be repeated a certain amount of times in order to gain god’s help and make the desire come true.

For the majority of readers this fact about Yaseen might be interesting. Namely, if it is uttered inside a house and then the entrance door of the house are closed, there is no way any magician or witch can approach that house. Each prayer from the Qur’an has one or more invisible guardians which are called Dobri in Bosnian tradition. So, for example the prayer Yaseen is under the protection of two servants called Zagašin and Fagašin, etc.

Evil spirits and diseases

Spiritual medicine is present in all religions and cultures around the world and it has its source in shamanism, ancient belief in the existence of good and bad spirits which in various ways influence the human and their own world, especially in the domain of disease and bad luck. Through numerous centuries postulates of shamanism remained unchanged, although religious views and understandings changed, which is understandable primarily because of the realisation that a human itself is a combination of spiritual and material.

Spiritual healer or “soul doctor” primarily must possess shamanistic gift i.e. ability to detect, in order to determine whether the Jinn is actually present in the diseased person, and if he is, what type of demon he is dealing with. He is using various mantic methods to accomplish this but also literal knowledge about the effect a Jinn has on the human mind and body.

Diseases ascribed in spiritual medicine to the negative effect of the Jinn are categorised; for example, earth Jinn causes complications with the stomach and bowels, if the Jinn enters the head then he causes headaches, insomnia and issues with the eyes; air Jinn possesses the heart, causing pain and great difficulties in breathing, and often a loss of consciousness; heavenly Jinn is the one most prone to affecting the nervous system, causing spasms (cramps) and contractions of the limbs, etc.

After determining the current state of the diseased and offering a diagnosis, spiritual healer prepares all things necessary for the ritual which he will perform in order to free the person from the negative effect of the Jinn. For that purpose they most frequently make talismans, though there are other ways to eliminate the spirit of the disease.
